Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of six month wellness examinations. Thorough check-ups and preventive care can help alleviate serious health problems. We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best:
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services: Our hospital is equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for your pets' complete health care needs.
Hospitalization: Since we have become mobile, generally refer cases that require hospitalization to a stationary facility. We do have cages on board our mobile unit but most animals that are feeling ill would not appreciate driving around curves, hills and bumps. We will be happy to suggest a stationary hospital near your home. We work closely with other local veterinarians to make sure your pet gets the best care available. Like most other hospitals in our area, we do not have staff overnight. We feel that it is best for the animals to be hospitalized under the supervision of a veterinarian. We request that you transfer you critical animals to the the emergency hospital for continued care overnight. This way, their fluids and medications can be continued and adjusted as needed. Fourteen hours (the time most hospitals are closed overnight) is a long time for a sick animal to be hospitalized without monitoring. If you are leaving your pet in another hospital overnight, we suggest you ask what type of supervison they will be getting. Some will have staff member check on the animals once around 11pm. Some may have staff that spends the night. If so, find out if this staff is a veterinarian, a licensed veterinary technician or just a normal staff member.
Surgical Services: Our state-of-the-art surgical suite provides for the performance of a wide variety of surgical procedures. However, most orthopedic (bone) surgeries are referred to veterinarians with a special interest in this type of specialized procedure. Many surgeries such as neuters and lumpectomies can be performed in our mobile clinic at your home. However, some more invasive procedures are best performed on Wednesday when we are stationary to allow a more lengthy recovery period.
Internal medicine consults: We offer referrals to an internal medicine specialist who performs ultrasounds, endoscopic procedures and helps us with the diagnosis of more complicated cases.
Radiology Services: Our on-site, modern X-ray equipment provides high quality radiographs to aid in the quick diagnosis of many disorders. Our new mobile clinic will display the radiograph on a computer screen in a digital format. This will help eliminate retakes and will make it easier to send the radiographs to experts over the internet.
Laboratory: Our in-house laboratory facilities provide for cytology, hematology, urinalysis and parasite testing. We have a new set of lab equipment that allows us to perform chemistry panels (to check kidneys, liver etc) in under 10 minutes. Our CBC machine will tell us about your pet's white blood cells and red blood cells in less than 2 minutes!! We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and consultations.
Permanent identification: We offer Home Again microchip identification. The Home Again service offers a pet finder system, Pet ID cards and Lost pet posters as well as access to some medical advice 24/7 via their 1800 number. Your Home Again chip can be read by any reader available in the United States. In addition, if you pet is injured while it is lost, Home again will pay for up to $3000 toward veterinary care.
Pharmacy: We maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, shampoos, flea and tick control products and heartworm preventatives to meet the needs of your pet. We also carry a full line of prescription diets. Through Vet Centric our partner pharmacy you can have prescriptions and diets delivered to your home. They also provide specialized items that we may not have in stock. Click on their link to place your order. Individualized Flea Control Programs: We develop programs for the specific needs of your pet and your own particular environmental situation. We will review with you the best ways to control fleas in your house, in your yard and on your pet.
Dietary Counseling: We will provide guidance regarding your pet's nutritional needs for each life stage, including dietary requirements for growth, weight maintenance and performance.
Emergency Care: If your pet is ill during the day, please call us and we will do our best to rearrange our schedule to accomodate you. We have an emergency slot saved each day around lunch to allow for unexpected illness. However, if you pet is turning blue, having trouble breathing or bleeding profusely, you should seek veterinary care at a stationary hospital. Our mobile clinic is not capable of being an ambulance service; however, if we are near your home, we are fully equipped to provide emergency care. That being said, certain critical cases may need to be stabilized and then transferred to Virginia Tech or another local hospital for additional care. After hours, emergency care is provided by Emergency Veterinary Services of Roanoke. Their number is 540-563-8575. Please call them prior to your arrival to state the nature of your emergency so that they can prepare for your arrival. A veterinarian and a trained staff are on site at that facility on weeknights, throughout the weekend and on holidays. To get to their facility take 581 to Peters Creek exit heading South. Immediately get in the left hand lane and turn left at the Girl Scout sign. The hospital will be on the right after you make the left hand turn. Please keep in mind that this is like going to the human emergency room. There may be other emergencies present at the same time that you arrive so staff may appear busy and rushed. Rest assured that your pet will get high quality care as doctors and staff are highly trained and equipment is modern.
